Our ethos

Biodynamic wine producers in Alsace

The decision to use biodynamics

We opted for biodynamic viticulture back in 1998, making our Domaine a pioneer of a method that puts nature and the Living World at the heart of its work and considers the environment in its entirety to be an essential element in the quality of its wines.

The result is healthier, easier to drink and revitalised wines, wines with unique personalities that express themselves not just through aromas but through texture and shapes and an extra dimension.

The Domaine Barmès-Buecher ethos

Every day, Maxime observes, listens to, and supports Life in its entirety.

He is the conduit for the terroirs, watching over the natural balance that will reveal the purest expressions buried deep in the soil.

In the winery, there is little human intervention, just the right amount of support is provided to allow the wines to reveal their personality, character and sincerity naturally.

Back to the basics

For us, crafting a wine is not about applying a biodynamic recipe, it's about being open to the present moment, to each moment in time. It's a feeling, it’s about being in tune with the Living World.

This level of attention and painstaking care allows us to create something special, to create a masterpiece, the ultimate representation of what the grape can offer in a terroir. We are allowing it to reveal itself to us and transmit the incredible energy of the environment in which it grows.

The question of ”what makes you different?” is one we hear a lot.

And it’s a question that we do not have the answer to. We don’t set out to differentiate ourselves from others. What we do differentiate is a moment in time, by being in tune with the seasons, the vineyard plot and the weather. We adapt to the elements around us, to the needs of the land, in order to guide and support it and enable it to reach its true potential.

Biodynamics is not just a method that we apply. It’s a state of mind, it’s common sense, focusing on what is most important. What Nature is asking from us is to slow down so that we can pay more attention to its needs.  There is no “foolproof” recipe for biodynamics. Just one single ingredient and that ingredient is… passion! Passion is what allows us to listen. We can’t always explain everything and let’s face it, some questions simply cannot be answered.

In the same way that we can’t really explain a friendship or the feeling of falling in love. It is an alchemy that takes place at a particular moment in time, a moment of being perfectly in tune with those around us. Without this, we are missing the point.  It’s also about slowing down and not questioning everything in order to reconnect with ourselves and our place on this Earth. This mindset also enables us to enjoy a wine for what it is without feeling the need to define it, trying to pick out fruity notes, floral notes, spicy notes etc. That would be to reduce the wine to just a category whereas it is actually a living thing.

And a wine can also be unpredictable. Of course, it bears the traits of its terroir but each wine does not necessarily express these traits in the same way. Our wines are an invitation to simply enjoy the present moment.

So, what makes us different from others?

We’re not sure but we just ARE!
